Things have changed for me, I used to study English just to kill time(消磨时间), but now I have a particular purpose(特别的⽬的)for it. To help me learn better, I have employed a tutor. My tutor is very helpful. She gives me quite a lot of
assignments(作业,任务)to do, and wants me to remember all the phrases and expressions. She says it is necessary topractice. I must learn the phrases and expressions as much as possible until they are fixed in my mind(脑海中定格). Andthe more I use them in real situations, the more natural they will become. However, I find it so uninteresting to practice somuch and I’m getting frustrated(失意,灰⼼). My tutor also says language is a tool. And it is used to express ideas, thoughts and feelings. She says that culture plays an important part in this. As a result, when I understand the culturebackground, I can use the language better. She also asks me to read a lot so I can reach this goal. My tutor sounds like aprofessor, and I feel lucky to have her helping me.
My American friend Burt helps me a lot, too. He knows my problem because I have exchanged my ideas with him. He told meto stay calm. He also gave me the most effective way of learning
that I’ve come across so far. He said that the best way to learn would require(要求)me to use a tape recorder or a CD
player. The CDs and tapes that I use record native voices, and I listen to them again and again. Imitating (模仿)what I hearmany times, my pronunciation gets better. You can see that with this I’m not only training my listening comprehension (听⼒理解)but also my speaking ability. This has made a world of(极⼤)difference!P7
Have you ever heard of online learning? If you are unfamiliar with it, please read the following
brief introduction(简短介绍). Online courses are very useful whether
requirements.
With online classes, you choose when and where you participate. There are no ―live‖ classes to attend. Instead, lectures, coursework, and other activities all take place at your convenience. You choose the place—at home, at school—whereveryou have access to a computer. You will get the same high-quality teaching from the instructor. The difference is that youwon’t have the day-to-day barriers of regular classes. This is good, because it’s these things that hinder(阻碍) so many of usfrom reaching our goals. After people are offered the opportunity of online learning, going to campus(⼤学)becomes athing of the past(过去的事). It will change your life!P59
There are some people who say that the war against AIDS is being won. I, for one, wish it is so. In truth, however,
despite(尽管)steps forward, we are losing the war against AIDS. For every piece of positive news that we hear aboutpowerful new drugs(药), there are more reports that are negative. One report, in particular, has made me feel very
disappointed about the AIDS problem. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is spreading at a growing rate. This information isfrom a report given yesterday.
The United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS and the World Health Organization put out the report. They said they expect thenumber of infections worldwide to grow. This growth is being fueled(加燃料)by an increase in the use of improperdrugs(不正确的药).
According to the report, 33.6 million people, including 1.2 million children, are carrying HIV. That compares to (⽐喻
为)33.4 million people who were HIV positive last year. But the organization said this year’s increase was much larger thanit appeared because last year’s figures (数字)in a few Latin American and Asian countries with high populations wereunderestimated (低估). So maybe there aren’t more people with HIV. Possibly, we are just becoming aware of (知道)the true number, which is larger than we had imagined. This should not give us reason to be glad, however. This yearalone, 5.6million people will become infected with HIV, the organizations said. This is a proportion
(⽐例)grow. Their numbers will become larger as infection rates
continue to rise in countries where poor status(贫穷的情况下), poor health networks and limited resources fuel the spreadof the virus. Clearly, we must do something about the problem. However, there are no easy answers.
