Part III Reading Comprehension (40%)

Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Read each passage carefully and decide on the best answer. Passage One

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time. Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.

E—mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

10005# 高级英语试题 第7页(共14页)

www.pass60.com祝考生Pass60

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun see a great movie, perhaps and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With e—mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E—mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use e—mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t eliminate any of the old ways. 61. The purpose of this passage is to ______. ( ) A. explain how to use the Internet

B. describe the writer’s joy of keeping up with the latest technology C. tell the merits and usefulness of the Internet

D. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet 62. The use of e—mail has made it possible for the writer to ______.( ) A. spend less time working B. have more free time with his child C. work at home on weekends D. work at a speed comfortable to him

63. According to the writer, e-mail has an obvious advantage over the telephone because the former helps one ______. ( )

A. reach a group of people at one time conveniently B. keep one’s communication as personal as possible C. pass on much more information than the latter D. get in touch with one’s friends faster than the later

65. The best title for this passage is ______.( ) A. Computers: New Technological Advances B. Internet: a New Tool to Maintain Good Friendship C. Computers Have Made Life Easier

D. Internet: a Convenient Tool for Communication Passage Two

When the steam engine was invented in the eighteenth century, it began one of the greatest revolutions that have ever happened in our world. The invention of the petrol engine at the end of the nineteenth century led to another enormous change in our lives. And the computer is almost certainly going to be no less important an invention than these engines were.

Just as there was a Stone Age, an Iron Age and so on, we have been living for centuries in a Paper Age, during which almost all information was kept and sent on paper; and so much of it is wasted after it has been used once that enormous numbers of trees have to be cut down every year to provide us with this paper. But now, with the computer, enormous amounts of information can be stored and sent without any paper at all, using small discs or the Internet.

Computers have made it possible to do very difficult calculations very much faster than any earlier machine could. Computers also allow one to send information to others anywhere in the world, via the telephone line, and to receive information from them. One can send a very long message more quickly from England to Australia, for example, than from one’s house to someone in the garden. Computers are not only used for writing; they can produce diagrams and pictures, and they can be used for playing games. One now sees them at airports and railway stations, in hotels and restaurants; in fact, almost everywhere where people gather.

66. The author seems to say that the invention of the computer is ______.( ) A. not so important as that of the steam and petrol engines B. at least as important as that of the steam and petrol engines C. less important than that of the steam and petrol engines D. far more important than that of the steam and petrol engines

70. The title that best expresses the main idea of the passage is ______.( ) A. Computer Age

C. Computer and Our Daily Life Passage Three

Psychologists in Britain have said that the last full week of January is the most depressing time of year and labeled next Monday “Blue Monday”. Blue is a slang (俚语) way of saying unhappy.

Mondays are generally seen as the worst day of the week because people feel grumpy (暴躁的) and tired at having to go back to work after a weekend with a different sleep pattern.

There are various reasons why more people feel depressed at this time of year. Many people have unpaid credit card bills for the Christmas presents they bought, and pay day is often not until the end of the month.

As the party season is over, people feel stressed because they have to go back to real life—work and commuting; and they may be unhappy with their body image after binge (闹饮作乐) on alcohols, chocolates, and other food at Christmas time.

People may have already failed in their New Year’s resolutions, such as giving up smoking. The bad weather in January can also contribute to people feeling fed up.

Some companies are taking this quite seriously and offering counseling for any staff who is feeling depressed. They hope that helping people as soon as there are signs of depression will avoid absenteeism. Evidence shows that unreasonable managers who contribute to their staff feeling fed up at this time can expect an uncooperative workforce.

However, it’s not all bad! Many people feel optimistic at this time, that things can only get better. Psychologists offer suggestions of how to combat feeling blue. These include spending 15 minutes doing a’gratitude exercise’ thinking about and writing down what you are grateful for, such as health, family, friends and so on.

Taking up a new hobby, doing some exercise, going to bed earlier, eating a healthy breakfast, and listening to some uplifting music, are all recommended as ways to feel more cheerful.

To avoid feeling blue next January, experts say that the best thing to do is to plan better next December. Spend less on presents, eat and drink less over the festive period, and make more realistic New Year’s resolutions.

Is there enough oil beneath the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (保护区) (ANWR) to help secure America’s energy future? President Bush certainly thinks so. He has argued that tapping (开采) ANWR’s oil would help ease California’s electricity crisis and provide a major boost to the country’s energy independence. But no one knows for sure how much crude oil lies buried beneath the frozen earth, with the last government survey, conducted in 1998, projecting output anywhere from 3 billion to 16 billion barrels (桶).

The oil industry goes with the high end of the range, which could equal as much as 10% of U.S. consumption for as long as six years. By pumping (采出) more than 1 million barrels a day from the reserve for the next two to three decades, lobbyists (游说议员者) claim, the nation could cut back on imports equivalent to all shipments to the U.S. from Saudi Arabia. Sounds good. An oil boom would also mean a multibillion—dollar windfall (意外之财) in tax revenues, royalties (开采权使用费) and leasing fees for Alaska and the Federal Government. Best of all, advocates of drilling say, damage to the environment would be insignificant. “We’ve never had a document case of oil rig (钻塔) chasing deer out onto the pack ice (浮冰),” says Alaska State Representative Scott Ogan .

Not so fast, say environmentalists. Sticking to the low end of government estimates, the National Resources Defense Council says there may be no more than 3.2 billion barrels of economically recoverable oil in the coastal plain of ANWR, a drop in the bucket (九牛一毛) that would do virtually nothing to ease America’s energy problems. And consumers would wait up to

10005# 高级英语试题 第12页(共14页)

www.pass60.com祝考生Pass60

a decade to gain any benefits, because drilling could begin only after much bargaining over leases, environmental permits and regulatory review. As for ANWR’s impact on the California power crisis, environmentalists point out that oil is responsible for only 1% of the Golden State’s electricity output and just 3% of the nation’s.

76. What does President Bush think of tapping oil in ANWR? ( ) A. It will exhaust the nation’s oil reserves. B. It will help secure the future of ANWR. C. It will help reduce the nation’s oil imports. D. It will increase America’s energy consumption.

77. We learn from the second paragraph that the American oil industry______. ( ) A. believes that drilling for oil in ANWR will produce high yields B. tends to exaggerate America’s reliance on foreign oil C. shows little interest in tapping oil in ANWR D. expects to stop oil imports from Saudi Arabia

78. Those against oil drilling in ANWR argue that______. ( ) A. it can cause serious damage to the environment B. it can do little to solve U.S. energy problems C. it will drain the oil reserves in the Alaskan region D. it will not have much commercial value

79. What do the environmentalists mean by saying “Not so fast” (Para .3)?( ) A. Oil exploitation takes a long time. B. The oil drilling should be delayed. C. Don’t be too optimistic. D. Don’t expect fast returns.

80. It can be learned from the passage that oil exploitation beneath ANWR’s frozen earth ______.

( )

A. remains a controversial issue B. is expected to get under way soon C. involves a lot of technological problems D. will enable the U.S. to be oil independent
